The Outbuildings

The 500 sq. ft. garage is of similar construction as the house, a pole building with treated T-111 siding, metal roof, and concrete floor. It is hexagonal shaped and has work areas with built-in work benches at each end. There is a 10’ wide roll-up door plus a steel entrance door facing the house. There is a storage loft above the car park area. The garage has 220V 50 amp power and four slider windows.

The barn is 16’ x 40’ with a floored attic area for storage. The roof is aluminum. There are temporary interior partitions and some concrete floors. The barn is a sturdy and structurally sound pole building built totally of pressure treated wood, except for the plywood attic flooring and the temporary partitions. The center bay was closed in and once used as a chicken house, and outside it is a very sturdy hexagonal heavy-duty wire enclosed pen that is serving now as a trellis for muscadine grapes. The barn has 120V power and a freeze-proof hydrant.

The Root Cellar is a totally underground 8’ x 12’ concrete building. Inside temperature stays in the 50’s year round due to earth sheltering. The entrance door is treated wood. The pressure tank for the well is installed at the back end of the building, The floor is gravel for good drainage. There is 120V power and light. The root cellar was built over a spring after drain tile and gravel were installed to route the spring water to a brick pool overlooking the pond.

The chicken pen is a completely chicken wire covered 20’ x 48’ x 12’ Gothic greenhouse frame. The base boards are treated wood. In the middle of the pen is a 8’ x 12’ walk-in chicken house built of treated wood. The chickens have plenty of room to range in the pen and can be let out of the pen during the day to forage. The enclosed pen protects them from hawks, raccoons, foxes, skunks, weasels, and possums that make chicken keeping otherwise difficult. Outside the chicken pen is a horizontal honey locust limb that is perfectly suited for a porch swing. On the other side is a triangle of hazelnut trees with a firepit in the middle. Pole beans planted along the sides of the chicken pen will climb the wire to the 12’ high center.
